About Alex Sanson

About Metaform and Alex Sanson

Alex’s passion for metal work started in the early 90’s when he created a series of small, playful and toy-like sculptures. Since then Alex has built and honed his skills and spent time exploring his art along three intertwined paths:

  • architectural and domestic design
  • kinetic and other sculpture
  • large-scale outdoor installations

With this creative exploration Alex has developed an eye for carefully balanced design. His unique style incorporates delicate, subtle and flowing elements with bold and striking forms, merging the two seamlessly in tough and durable metal.  Alex’s organic metal work styling comes from a harmonious marrying of sleek contemporary design and medieval blacksmithing techniques.

Exploring, developing, and refining a specialised artisan practice.

Metal work practice started millennia ago, with skills and techniques having been developed constantly through this time. In-depth experience with this medium really is of paramount importance when creating practical, functional and beautiful pieces, whether they be garden gates, grand entrances or bespoke water features.

Alex endeavours to create work that is not only beautiful in its own right, but is also enhanced by becoming part of a living space. His metal work is carefully designed to co-exist with its surroundings and to inform and delight the senses. It is crucial to Alex that his pieces engage with the world, resulting in a balanced, organic style.

“I seek to create works that induce a sense of joy and engagement with the world around us.” – Alex Sanson

With his broad array of clients and considerable years of experience, Alex has the necessary tools and the vision to complete everything from metal work, metal gates and furniture, to sculpture and water features. Many of Alex’s designs incorporate different materials including wood, glass, and stone, and he also offers a technical design and fabrication service to other designers, helping them to construct and realise their own vision.

Sustainability and environmental impact

Alex is committed to minimising his practice’s impact on the environment, particularly with regard to climate change.  Both his studio and house are 100% powered by solar (grid connected, averaged through the year). Projects are designed carefully to minimise consumption of new resources and to re-use materials and parts where possible. Very little waste is generated, most of which is steel and easily recycled.  Further opportunities are always being sought and reviewed to offset emissions from his practice.
